So here I am in India for a short break - and I?' really enjoying the sunshine after a pretty dismal British summer. Most of the time I'm focusing on work for the small charity I'm involved with called Links-India but I'm getting quite a bit of time to work on the site as well.
By the way I've recently started a facebook group for the charity and have been challenged to grow the membership to 100 before the end of October. I've absolutely no idea how I'm supposed to do that but if you're on facebook please join up!
DePuy Recall
Most of this week I've been writing about the DePuy recall. It is truly shocking the way that DePuy is trying to blame the victims and I do urge anyone who has had a DePuy ASR implant to keep up to date with what is going on and to seek legal advice. There is a short statute of limitations when it comes to personal injury claims (normally two years) and problems with the implant may not surface till later.
Osteoarthritis causes your brain to shrink!
Yup the latest news from the academic world is that the pain associated with osteoarthritis can cause changes to the size of different parts of the brain. For instance a part of the brain called the thalamus tends to shrink. The thalamus is associated with processing sensory cues (including pain) and regulating consciousness and sleep. After surgery this changed reversed. One question that researchers will now address is whether there comes a time when the changes are irreversible. I expect to write on this in more detail when I get back to London.
In the meantime....
Keep up with your exercises - whether you are pre-or post-op - they really do make a difference
