post hip dislocation

by Nikki
(UK)

I had my THR 18 months ago, uncemented ceramic on ceramic. Unfortunately, it dislocated this week, with no fall or accident to cause it. It has been put back in place under GA and I am waiting to be seen again next week.
How long is recovery after a dislocation, and how long before I can return to work (as a nurse)? It still feels a little unstable and sore yet.
Thanks

Some thoughts

It is very unusual for a hip to dislocate like this. The main danger is in the first few months post-op whilst the soft tissues are healing and before all the hard work of your exercises has kicked in.

There are issues about what surgical approach was used, with a posterior incision having a higher chance of dislocating then an anterior, but again I would have thought that was only an issue in the first few months (if you do your exercises of course!)

Has your surgeon told you why he thinks your hip dislocated? I would suggest that the most important issues is to work out is why it happened in order to prevent a repeat dislocation.

How long will it take to recover and return to work will depend on what injury was done to the surrounding soft tissues and how stable the joint is now.

Are you able to start exercising again?

Best of luck with your recovery
