What is uncemented total hip replacement and how does it differ from cemented? Is recovery different or prolonged to other surgeries? Are there things to consider if you have this particular surgery?
I'm not sure I can add anything to the original article on what an uncemented hip replacement actually is but here are some more advantages and disadvantages.
There is some risk that a cemented prosthesis will change position before the cement is fully set. This can't happen with usning the uncemented approach.
With a cemented fixation there is always a risk that the bone cement layer will crack and/or successively disintegrate years after the operation.
On the other hand with an uncemented replacement there is some risk that bits of bone marrow will be pushed into the circulation as a result of the forceful hammering needed to fit the prosthesis.
There is a need for restricted weight bearing 6-12 weeks - longer than with a cemented fixation
The patient may experience pain in the thigh up to one year post-operatively.
There is also a risk that the bone may fracture during the operation.
