What is the percentage of people who have 100% mobility after hip replacement?

Pamela- Thanks for commenting on my site: www.personal-goal-setting.com

My grandfather had a hip replacement a dozen or so years ago, and he never really was the same afterwards. I think he was in is mid 80s when he had it and died in 2007 at the age of 95. He lived a good life and is now in heaven with his wife.

My question, what is the percetange of people who make a 100% recovery after a hip replacement?

Thanks

Best

Wayne

Expectations
by: Hi Wayne

My mother was ill for several years and, about a year before she died, we had an awkward conversation in which I mentioned that, if she recovered completely, she would still be ten years older than before she became ill and so would not be in such good health at 80 after ten years of illness as she had been at 70.

She replied that nothing but complete recovery to pre-illness levels would do. Silence from us both.

I wonder if your grandfather's expectations were just too high? I'm sad that he was disappointed, and so were you.

Outcome Statistics
by: Pamela

Hi
Its difficult to answer your question because I'm not sure what you mean by 100% recovery? Do you mean recovery from the surgery itself or do you mean the patient getting back to full mobility? I think as you've shared your grandfather's story you probably mean the former.

The statistics I have to hand from the UK show that 97% of people undergoing total hip replacement are happy with the outcome.

I think though the figures are influenced by how much pain the person has been experienced - and for how long.

It is known that people who have fractured their femur are less satisfied. This is thought to be because they expect to get back to full functioning whereas osteoarthritis patients really only want to be out of pain and have significantly increased mobility but don't expect 100% mobility. Thus the threshold of satisfaction differs depending on cause.

There are a number of complications associated with the procedure - though these are rare.

Hope that helps
Pamela
